The aims and objectives of the SJM are to provide a memorial for the 6 million Jewish people, including 1.5 million children, who were murdered during the Holocaust. To make each visitor aware that the Holocaust, a unique event in the history of mankind, has universal implications. The most important of these are seen to be:

· the understanding of the potential for evil in totalitarian regimes
· the need to cherish the individual freedoms freely provided to each citizen in democratic Australia
· the understanding of the potential for good and evil within each individual human being
· the power of the individual to make a difference.

Within this context, the fundamental purpose of the SJM is to document and teach the history of the Holocaust so that the events of the Holocaust will never be repeated.

The SJM aspires to excellence in all areas of Museum activity, particularly in the provision of curatorial, educational and research facilities and services. I will make some suggestions how you, as classroom teachers, could schedule visits to the Museum for your students. We offer various educational and remembrance programs in order that your students gain a full and balanced education about the Holocaust.
